This remarkable tree, the Emancipation Oak, holds a rich history, not just for its age, but for being an historical landmark. It rests on the grounds of Hampton University and is the site of the first southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. It also finds a home on National Geographic’s “Ten Most Remarkable Trees of the World” list.
